Why I Will Never Quit Sugar Cold Turkey

Well never say never… but for now I am happy providing my body with a little bit of processed sugar. I’m by no means a sweet tooth, please give me chips over lollies any day! BUT I love my chocolate, a cheeky Friday night glass of wine, and a teaspoon of sugar in my tea. I guess I wanted to make this post because a) it’s Easter so TREAT YOURSELF! and b) there is such a stigma these days on processed sugar, what you should and shouldn’t be putting into your body, and it is really affecting (especially the girls) in todays society. I’ve tried to quit sugar 100%, and my body literally shut down.

Now I’m no diet expert, so what I say in this post is all my opinion based on my own experience. If you want to try and go on a no-sugar diet, by all means do it! Just please listen to your body.

Let me start from the beginning. I’ve always wanted to cut back on my sugar intake. I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who could drink their coffee black, and turn down a donut, but that’s just not me. And nor would I be happy if I ever did that!

About a year ago, I tried to do the keto diet, and on day two (yes DAY TWO without sugar) I had to call in sick to work because I had the shakes, felt sooo faint, and all round felt like I’d drop to the floor any second. I literally spent the day in my bed. At that moment, I knew the whole “no sugar” thing wasn’t for me. Knowing what I know now, and looking back on my childhood, I’ve always had an intolerance to low blood-sugar levels (no I’m not diabetic by the way!)

Since that keto incident, I treat myself to sugar, but I have been watching what I eat and where I put it. What I mean is, instead of having 2 teaspoons of sugar in my morning coffee plus a sprinkle of sugar over my cornflakes, I will instead just have 1 sugar in my coffee and have trained my taste buds to enjoy it and enjoy cornflakes without the added calories. Yes it might tastes 8 times better with sugar, BUT I feel 100 times better for forcing myself not to have the unnecessary added sugar to my first meal of the day! Plus it makes room for a cheeky chocolate, or a night out every now and then and not feeling guilty for it!!!

For the past 3 months, I have been working out 5 days a week, and eating healthily, so I feel like I can treat my body to a little bit of sugar every day. Could I be healthier? Absolutely. This is such a random post for me to write, but I really wanted to let other young women know that it’s okay to treat yourself!! Unless you wanna be a buff middle-aged man who weight trains every day, I say eat that sugar girl!

I guess I made this post because all these diet fads are so on-trend right now, but they’re not for everyone. What I’m about to say is cliché, but it’s sooo much healthier to eat what you want but in moderation. Take time to consider where you’re consuming your sugar and see where you can cut some out. But then again, there’s always going to be a little tiny voice in the back of mind wondering what would’ve happened if I kept on the no-sugar fad and pushed through. Would I hate sugary things now? Or would I have ended up in hospital? Who knows. All I know now is I’m healthy, I’m enjoying my food, and my morning coffees with 1 teaspoon of sugar 😉
